Writing Briefs That Get Results

Whether you’re working with human talent or AI systems, clear briefing is essential. Here’s how to communicate your voice over needs effectively in 2026.

The Essential Brief Elements

1. Project Overview
– What is this content for?
– Where will it be used?
– Who is the target audience?
– What action should viewers/listeners take?

2. Voice Description
Use specific adjectives:
– “Warm, conversational, like a trusted friend”
– “Authoritative but approachable, like a favorite professor”
– “Energetic and youthful, like a fitness instructor”

Avoid vague terms like “professional” or “nice.”

3. Reference Examples
Provide links to voices or ads you like. Even “not like this” examples help.

4. Technical Requirements
– Final format (MP3, WAV, etc.)
– Sample rate and bit depth
– File naming conventions
– Delivery method

5. Pronunciation Guide
For brand names, technical terms, names, and unusual words.

AI-Specific Briefing Additions

If using AI voice platforms:

SSML Markup
Include speech synthesis markup for pauses, emphasis, and pronunciation if platform supports it.

Emotion Tags
Many AI platforms support emotion parameters. Specify desired emotional tone for each section.

Voice Model Selection
Specify exact voice model name, not just “female American.”

Fallback Instructions
What happens if AI output is unacceptable? Who has authority to switch to human talent?

Human Talent-Specific Briefing

Direction Style
Do you want multiple takes? Wild lines? How much improvisation is welcome?

Session Logistics
Will you direct live? Review after? How many revision rounds are included?

Usage Rights
Specify exactly where and how long the recording will be used.

AI Clause
Clarify whether recordings may be used for AI training (we recommend no).

Common Briefing Mistakes

Too Vague
“Make it sound good” gives no useful direction.

Too Restrictive
Over-specifying every detail leaves no room for talent’s expertise.

Missing Context
Without understanding purpose and audience, talent can’t make good choices.

Conflicting Direction
“Urgent but relaxed” or “professional but casual” creates confusion.

No References
Verbal descriptions are subjective. Audio references clarify instantly.
